This is Stephie.  She is a very striking Harlequin female with wonderfully cropped ears and long legs.  She has a regal look about her even though she has not been cared for properly.  She was picked up by animal services having just been hit by a car.  She was temporarily hurt but recovered quickly.  She is emaciated and is about 30 to 40 pounds underweight.  She has horrible elbow calluses, strongly suggestive of being kept outside in the dirt or on cement.  She has cactus quills firmly stuck in her stomach and road rash and old scars all over her body.  Her teeth are yellow and a couple are loose, probably from the car hitting her.  She is heartworm positive on top of everything else.  She is very shy and unsure but is gentle when touched.  She appears to be around 4 to 5 years of age and probably was used to make puppies.

Update on Stephie from her foster home.......Stephie has come out of her shell and has decided to trust her foster mom and dad.  She is learning to play with a couple of the dogs in residence and has befriended the cat.  With quality foods she began to gain weight at 1 pound a day for the first 10 days and because of her diet, her teeth are now white and clean, needing no dental procedures after all!  Her body is changing and filling in but she is still a little weak from losing so much weight.  The cactus quills were removed and her teeth were pulled.  Conventional heartworm treatment was not started because she was in such ill health.  Dane Angel Network decided to try a natural heartworm treatment instead while she was recovering her strength and health because it can be given even if dogs are not well with no side effects.  We will be documenting her progress.

Stephie has told her foster folks that she prefers the name Sofie.  :-)  She does respond better to that name so they are now calling her Sofie.  She is a very loving and affectionate girl and will lean and stay right with you.  She is definitely a people dog and would probably do well with no other dogs or with one other one.  She has won the love of her foster mom and dad and they say she is wonderful and real easy to have living with them.  She is good in her crate and her house manners are great.  She is currently being treated for heartworms and therefore it will be a little while before she is available for adoption unless one is agreeable to continuing her treatment as required.
